Plastic Bag Usage during the Coronavirus Pandemic

2020 - The Year That Won't Go Away

UPDATED: 10/08/2020 | Oct 10, 2020 : We’re all going to be celebrating one of the happiest New Year’s Day holidays of our lifetimes on January 1, 2021. This year has been one-of-a-kind, and we know that you are ready to start inching back toward “normal” as soon as possible.

In addition to the pandemic and its obvious economic impact on so many people, the plastics industry has been upended by increased demand, one hurricane that damaged resin producers, another hurricane threatening, and then there is downright greed on the part of those who make our raw materials. Not judgin’. Just sayin’.

Polymer resin production had been pulled back prior to the pandemic. Resin producers do this to keep supply just under demand, thus inflating the prices they can get for the product that this tightly knit group controls. This isn’t a new practice. It’s how they ensure their own indefinite profitability.

The pandemic only magnified the market conditions as those who convert the raw material into goods scattered to find more than originally projected. Since reactors can’t simply be turned on with the flip of a switch, resin manufacturers couldn’t keep up with the unexpected demand, and the prices went up even more as a result.

The gulf coast has suffered one major hurricane this year, and another one is threatening as this goes to press. Since most reactors are located along the gulf coast, hurricanes often knock a few of them out of service for a while. That has further elevated pricing this year - the craziest year of all time.

There is Good News!

Get your chin up off the desk now, and we’ll help you to rest easier. We’ve now got plenty of product in most categories, and while some items are going to go up in price, we are working hard to absorb or minimize the impact of all this nonsense on your packaging costs. Stretch film is the only category that we’ve been unable to keep pricing down as much as we’d like, and even there we have delayed the increases until the absolute last minute - usually far behind our competitors.

Don’t fear running out. That’s the one thing that none of us can tolerate, and we’ve stocked up to the rafters to make sure that we’re going to be able to take care of you. We’ll keep the prices as low as possible, and if you’ve been around with us for a while, you already know that we’re always going to take care of you in every way we can.

We’re very grateful to you for coming through this with us. If there is anything else that we can do to specifically help you, please do contact us. We’ll do our best to make your packaging procurement decisions easier.

We understand the reservations that many are having regarding traditional inventory, supply and production levels, and we would like to reassure you that we are well situated to meet your requirements with our stock and custom product options. As an official “Essential Business,” our production and shipping will continue to operate uninterrupted by any Shelter in Place orders. Orders for Customer Pick Up will not be accepted. Some few Asian products may have very temporary out-of-stock status, but we don’t expect this to last long enough to create issues for most of our customers. Our domestic production is still operating 24/7, and there are no plans for even a temporary shutdown.

At Discount Plastic Bags, we already have several work-from-home personnel who serve you regularly. Our Customer Service department is open for extended business hours through the crisis. We will be open until 7:00 PM CDT in order to serve the west coast until 5:00 PM PDT. Out of an abundance of caution we have asked all office personnel to work from home.

Wuhan, China has many days reporting no new cases. We are encouraged by this news that there is reason to believe things will be back to normal soon. We will certainly be prepared to serve you, whether that is right now, tomorrow, next week, next month or next year. Your business is something for which we are very grateful, and we look forward to helping you in any way possible as we walk together through this temporary crisis.
